"Conta a história que em 1549 integrantes da missão colonizadora do Governador Geral Thomé de Souza desembarcaram em solo brasileiro. Entre eles estavam a família Garcia D’ávila , que em reconhecimento de seus bons trabalhos recebeu, em sesmarias, uma vasta área de terra ao norte de Salvador. Ali se estabeleceu e construiu um forte para defesa da Capital. Em um local bastante alto denominado: Tatuapara ergueu um Castelo, chamado de Casa da Torre, que observava e sinalizava para Salvador a chegada de barcos invasores. Garcia D’Ávila se tornou o maior latifundiário do mundo, desbravando terras do norte de Salvador até o Maranhão.Dentre vários povoados que foram surgindo no litoral norte da Bahia, nasceu Porto de Sauípe, entre os anos 1620 á 1640. No inicio só haviam por aqui os índios Tupinambás, depois vieram os Portugueses, os Jesuítas, e com a chegada dos escravos, foram se mesclando as raças e Porto de Sauípe se tornou uma espécie de aldeia de pescadores. Nas cercanias de Porto de Sauípe ainda existe as ruínas de aldeias indígenas e da missão dos Jesuítas que passaram por aqui no século XVII.
Sauípe na língua indígena quer dizer Formiga, também é nome de um Rio que banha a região, o nome deste povoado Porto de Sauípe e de outra comunidade das proximidades chamada apenas Sauípe, e recentemente foi adotado pela Costa do Sauípe um grande complexo hoteleiro que se instalou em nossos arredores.Com a influência da arte indígena, desenvolveu a vocação do artesanato de piaçava, uma tipo de trançado para a confecção de chapéus, esteiras, bolsas, e outros produtos que antigamente eram trocados por farinha, feijão, jabá (carne de sertão) e hoje graças a fundação da Associação dos Artesãos de Porto de Sauípe estão sendo comercializados até no mercado internacional.O artesanato trouxe uma grande evolução para Porto de Sauípe, se tornando a fonte de renda principal de muitas famílias desta localidade.A mariscagem e a pesca de jangadas são outras inclinações da população local, dado a forte ligação com o mar e o manguezal, que durante muito tempo foi a principal fonte de renda e alimentação da população. De 10 anos para cá, Porto de Sauípe era uma vila com apenas 2000 habitantes e com a expansão turística, a construção da linha verde (estrada que liga Salvador ao Mangue Seco) a população que até então vivia isolada, passou á um número de 10.000 pessoas.Porto de Sauípe é hoje uma mistura, do passado e do presente, de jangadeiros ao mar, e do artesanato milenar da piaçava, as novas tecnologias trazidas pelo turismo. Porto de Sauípe hoje tenta se adaptar a nova realidade do crescimento local, com a construção da usina de reciclagem de lixo orgânico, a implantação da Estação Digital ( escola de informática e cidadania), a construção da Associação de Artesãos e do Centro Comunitário, desenvolvimento de projetos de pesca, melhoria na qualidade do ensino, buscando qualificação da mão de obra, sustentabilidade para as famílias, e um desenvolvimento turístico de forma ordenada, sem prejuízos ao meio ambiente.";

With the influence of the aboriginal art, developed the vocation of the Craft of piaçava, a type of braid for the confection of hats, mats, stock markets, and other products that formerly they were changed by flour, beans, “jabá” (dry meat) and today thanks to foundation of the Association of the Craftsmen of Porto de Sauípe are being commercialized until in the international market.the craft brought a great evolution to Porto de Sauípe, becoming the source of main income of many families of this locality.\r\nThe shellfishes and fishes it of rafts is other inclinations of the local population, because the strong link with the sea and the swamp, that during much time was the main source of income and feeding of the population. 10 years ago, Porto de Sauípe was a village with only 2000 inhabitants and with the tourist expansion, the construction of the linha verde (road that binds Salvador to the Mangue Seco) the population that until then lived isolated, today is a 10.000 number of inhabitants.Porto de Sauípe is today a mixture, of the past and of the present, raft man to the sea, and the millenarian piaçava craft, the new technologies brought for the tourism.
